Football at the Olympics: the battle about Team UK

olimpicstadiumFootball at the Olympics: the battle about Team UK David Beckham, Gareth Bale and Alex Ferguson together towards the gold medal. This is the dream of the BOA, the British Olympic Association, who announced there will be an United Kingdom football team in the next London Games despite the protests and the denials of the home nations Football Associations.

“I have been at this for over two years” Andy Hunt, BOA Chief Executive, said. So players coming from England, North Ireland, Wales and Scotland – nations competing individually in every FIFA competitions - will be able to join one team, managed by the English Football Association (FA), just as they used to do in the Olympics until 1960 Rome Games. However to the home nations Football Associations, the Team UK risks to jeopardize the identity of the different British football cultures.

Football at the Olympics: the battle about Team UK

The FA claims to have an agreement with the other home nations accepting its chance to select Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish players. Also there is not legal framework which can restrain FA from calling other home nations’ players. To Hunt, selecting only English footballers would be impossible because "any policy that is discriminatory would be in breach of the Olympic Charter". However home nations Football Associations denial every sort of agreement. "Our position remains we are opposed to taking part in Team GB," said Stewart Regan, Scottish FA Chief Executive. "I was surprised by Andy Hunt's comments, especially since we have had no dialogue with him. We need to protect our identity and we have no interest in taking part”. Same words came from the Welsh side. "We are not part of any agreement” said Phil Pritchard, Welsh FA president.

Football at the Olympics: the battle about Team UK

“The FA has no authority to speak on our behalf - they do not represent Wales whatsoever and that's a fact”. Home nations fears also that they could lose their FIFA founder status and consequently their spots inside the International Football Association Board (IFAB), the body that holds the power of changing the international football rules. Even if FIFA president Sepp Blatter ensured that British teams keep being separated in the other football competitions, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish Football Associations’ concern is that this will be the first step towards their own disappearance. “I would rather lose as Scotland than win as Great Britain”, said former manager Craig Brown summarizing the thought of many Scot football exponents.

Football at the Olympics: the battle about Team UK

They also accuse BOA of creating Team UK only to try to dispose of 1.7m unsold Olympic football tickets. Additionally, the creation of a Team GB would be very gainful in terms of merchandising: the sales of replica Team UK jerseys could help BOA to manage the financial loss they expect to make this year. So GB Team could come back on international football scenario after more than fifty years. Rome 1960 was the last Olympics seeing a British squad on the field. Team UK joined eight times the Games, winning in the 1908 and 1912 editions. For its comeback, UK football team could count on several talented players coming from every home nations.

David Beckham proposed himself as captain – the squad will be made up by 15 under 23 players plus three born before 1989 – of a team who could count, for example, on English young stars Theo Walcott and Andy Carroll, Welsh talents Gareth Bale and Aaron Ramsey, North Irish midfielder Olivier Norwood and Scottish defender Paul Hanlon. Who will be the manager of this brand new team? First BOA’s choice for this job is Man United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, with Stuart “Psycho” Pearce – currently England U21 manager – as alternative.

Other questions regard this new national team’s fans: can Team UK fascinate British people like home nations teams can? And, above all, which chants will we hear coming from the terraces during the matches?

The 2011 UEFA Champions League final will be held at Wembley Stadium

The type required is dependent on whether the viewer has an active or passive 3D set. Active glasses have LCD lenses (battery required) which alternately 'black out' each eye depending on whether the right or left image is being shown on screen. Passive glasses use polarisation to separate left and right images – the left lens filter blocks out the right image, and the right lens filter blocks the left image. This is the 11th European Cup final involving a team playing in their home country and seven times the 'home' team have prevailed – Real Madrid (1957), Milan (1965), Manchester United (1968), Ajax (1972), Liverpool (1978), Juventus (1996) and Borussia Dortmund (1997). Stade de Reims (1956), AS Roma (1984) and Barcelona (1986) all lost a final on home soil.Barcelona lost 2-1 at Arsenal on their last visit to London in February. They did beat the Gunners 4-2 at Wembley in the 1999/2000 group stage, the only previous time they have faced English opponents at the national stadium. The European Cup is an important competition organised by UEFA (Union des Associations Européennes de Football )since 1955 for the top football clubs in Europe.

The association was founded in Basle, Switzerland, on 15 June 1954, acting on behalf of Europe's national football associations to promote football as the most popular sport in the world.

This year the Uefa Champions League committee has chosen an iconic stadium for the final competition that is the most watched annual sporting drawing over 100 million television viewers. Wembley, with its 90000 seats, is the second biggest stadium in Europe after Camp Nou in Barcelona. Moreover it is a masterpiece of the futuristic architecture with its Arch that has the crucial function of supporting 5,000 tonnes of the roof structure. Last edition of UEFA Champions League show took place at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid and Inter won the competition beating Bayer Monaco after 2-0 victory. A part from the teams that will play the final, in regards of them it's difficult to forecast results, the event will involve all the spectators in a gloriuos atmosphere.

Chelsea and ANCELOTTI: FOR THE LOVE OF IT

AncelottiCarlo Ancelotti has spoken about what drives him on as a football manager and the desire for victory within the Chelsea squad, a group of players whom he is happy to thank for their commitment over the season.

As the team take to the pitch for the final time this season, one place short of the desired finishing position in the league, it will not be due to lack of effort that they end the season without silverware.

'I have to say thanks to every one of my players because more or less they do their best every time, they were in focus,' reports Ancelotti.

'The atmosphere around the training session every time was good, it was correct. Even if they did not reach their best, I have to shake their hands and say thank you.

'Petr Cech has had a fantastic season but other players also have - John Terry,Ashley Cole.

'I didn't know so well John Terry [before I came to Chelsea]. I didn't know so well Ashley Cole, or Didier Drogba. For me they were new players. I understood their characteristics, their ability, their skill, their professionalism, so it has been a fantastic experience for me.'

The same will-to-win the players have every time they take to the pitch is similar to Ancelotti's own approach to the game. He simply loves to manage football teams to victory and would continue to do so for years to come, even if a big club job was not available.

'Why not? I have a respect for all the teams, for all the jobs of my colleagues,' the Italian says.

'It doesn't matter if you manage the top team or a smaller team, it is your job, it is the same.

'I started to train in the second division in Italy and I was happy training in the second division.

'For me it is important to work and if, one time, I have a possibility to manage another division team, I would.

'I have seen a lot of games from the Championship in England on TV and the atmosphere is fantastic. If you watch a second division game in Italy, maybe there will be 2,000 in the stadium. It's totally different.

'The difference [from then Premier League] is the money but when you train or manage, you don't think about earning the money, you think about working with passion.

'The money has never been a motivation for me, nor for the players. The motivation is to play, to win, to be the best, to stay at the top as a player and a manager. The motivation is to give yourself a good image.'

REACTION: A GOOD RELATIONSHIP

Carlo Ancelotti thanked the Chelsea fans at Goodison Park following his last match in charge as manager.

The Italian, who parted company with the club after the game, which ended in a 1-0 defeat, heard his name being sung by the travelling support, and showed his gratitude.

'I was happy for this reason. We have a very good relationship, they support us, they support me all the time. For this reason I am really happy,' said Ancelotti.

'We would like to finish the season differently but unfortunately we needed a strong motivation today,' he said. 'Even though we had one more player in the second half, we didn't play well, it was disappointing.

'It was difficult to find the right motivation. Obviously we wanted to play differently, to finish the season differently but this is normal at the end of the season when you have worked really hard but lost the fight for the title with Manchester United. To maintain motivation is not easy.

'We cannot say we are happy to reach second place, Chelsea has to fight for the title all the time. Sometimes there are problems and you are not able to win, this was this year for us.'

Chelsea went a goal down after a Jermaine Beckford run which saw the Everton striker break down the pitch before a lucky bounce enabled him to pass John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic before finding the net.

Everton manager David Moyes felt the goal summed up his side's performance.

'We were down to 10 men and it was a really good goal, it really epitomised Everton today.

'I thought we played well with 11, I thought we played well with 10 and I thought it was a good game. We had the best chances today. I was pleased with how the players played.'

Ferguson: Fergie won't rest all his stars against Blackpool

Ferguson: Fergie won't rest all his stars against Blackpool

Sir Alex Ferguson will not field a team of youngsters against Blackpool this weekend, ensuring the Manchester United boss avoids risking the wrath of the FA and opposition managers. The relegation-threatened Tangerines travel to Old Trafford on the final day of the season in the relegation zone, though they do not necessarily need a positive result to stay up.

Blackpool could still stay up if they lose at United, but both Wigan and Birmingham would also have to suffer defeats - the latter by more goals than Ian Holloway's side. Holloway had been hopeful of securing a result against the newly-crowned champions, as it had been expected that Ferguson would rest a host of first-team regulars as he did on the final day of the 2006-07 season - when West Ham survived by winning at Old Trafford - and at the end of 2008-09, when United's second-string beat Hull 1-0.

But in a move that will delight the Tangerines' relegation rivals Wigan, Birmingham, Wolves and Blackburn, Ferguson has revealed that Edwin van der Sar and a number of other first-team regulars will be among those who feature on Sunday. "I have players who need a game," said Ferguson. "Darren Fletcher, Paul Scholes, Anderson, Dimitar Berbatov, Patrice Evra and Edwin van der Sar will play." The game will be Van der Sar's final appearance at Old Trafford before he retires and could be the same for Scholes, who is also tipped to quit in the summer. Berbatov is included in a bid to help him move ahead of Manchester City's Carlos Tevez in the race for the Golden Boot. Despite suggestions that Scholes could be set to call time on his career, Ferguson remains hopeful of the midfielder agreeing a one-year extension. "I don't think this will be his last game," he said.

"We have discussed it and I have encouraged him to stay on for another year. "We'll talk at the end of the season." Ferguson added that a number of his first team stars will join the likes of Nicky Butt and David Beckham in making an appearance in Gary Neville's testimonial, which takes place against Juventus on Tuesday. "We have to think about that game because Gary has been a fantastic servant to this club," said Ferguson. "I hope he gets the crowd he deserves." © ESPN EMEA Ltd
